Physical activity helps to burn the calories that a typical sedentary lifestyle fails to do; calories that are otherwise stored in the body as fat. The Parliamentary Health Committee Report of 2004 suggests that 21.8% of boys and 27.5% of girls are either overweight or obese. Further, “an overweight child has a 95% chance of becoming an obese adult. Obesity related diseases reduce life by around 9 years (BBC, 2006).” Quite simply, by introducing a pattern of physical activity into a child’s lifestyle, we may be shaping long-term behaviours that help to raise the quality and longevity of life.

Games and physical activities not only provide an excellent opportunity for developing particular skills, they also:

- provide large and fine muscle development and control
- provide a vehicle for fitness and health development
- allow children to gain mental alertness
- increase the children’s language and communication concepts
- help children to understand fair play and sportsmanship
- develop children’s social awareness and moral development

We believe that every child should have the opportunity to be active, to learn how to interact in group game situations, and to enjoy being on the move.
